Dumb move: Senator Joe Biden has implied that Sarah Palin doesn’t care as much as he does about special needs children because she does not support embryonic stem cell research. From the story:
“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy…and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect,” he said. “Well, guess what folks? If you care about it, why don’t you support stem cell research?”
The Obama campaign denied that Biden’s barb was aimed at Sarah Palin, but who else gave a speech mentioning special needs kids in the last two weeks?
The McCain campaign struck back:
“Barack Obama’s running mate sunk to a new low today launching an offensive debate over who cares more about special needs children,” McCain-Palin spokesman Ben Porritt said. “Playing politics with this issue is disturbing and indicative of a desperate campaign.”
We haven’t heard much from the CURES!CURES! CURES! crowd in this campaign, primarily I think, due to the success of IPSCs and the failure to obtain FDA approval for human trials using traditional ESCRs due to the danger of tissue rejection and tumor formation. Indeed, at least for now, I believe the issue has lost all resonance.
Had such a slime ball been hurled a year or two ago, it might have been different. But this kind of “you don’t care about suffering people if you oppose federal funding of ESCR” demagoguery is long past its shelf life. Talk about the need for change!

Talk about sinking to new lows..McCain sunk to a new low when he chose Palin. If he wanted a female he could have chosen me or any female for that matter. Palin is no Hillary Clinton. The thought of McCain being a heart beat away from a heart attack and this lipstick wearing pitbull takes over the country..really, really scares me.

Oh, come on - this claim is silly. Biden’s point implies that Republican’s (He specifically says Republicans and NOT Palin) policy stance is inconsistent with their professed support for parents of children with developmental disabilities. Whether or not this statement is accurate, it’s clearly not a personal attack on Palin - rather, it is an attack on the Republican’s policy. In addition, while Biden’s comments certainly imply that one ultimate goal of research is cures - I don’t see any mention of ‘cures! cures! cures!’ here - a bit of hyperbole, methinks. Finally, Biden recommends supporting stem cell research. He does not specify ESCR. I see no reason to believe that Biden’s comments are not suggesting support for ALL forms of stem cell research. Curious that the term ‘demagoguery’ made its way into this post…
How about a reasonable response to Biden’s comments? I would suggest something like - “I disagree with Biden’s conclusions about support for stem cell research being a sound policy for supporting parents with disabled children…I think other policies are better, since it is unclear whether or when cures might ever be available and I’m opposed to the destruction of embryos.”.
Again, policy disagreements are not personal attacks. Whether Biden is right or not - this is hardly a ’slime ball’.

They are *both* playing a dirty game of politics.
Palin was chosen as VP largely because she has a disabled child - McCain was getting only reluctant support from the social conservative demographic, but having Palin has perked their interest once more by demonstrating the strength of her pro-life convictions. Her child is very much being used for political gain.
Biden is just using dubious science to make one of the opposing team look bad. Nothing new there.
These are just standard political tricks. Politicians manipulate the voters however they can. Lies, trickery, spreading false rumors. If they didn’t do that, they wouldn’t be elected.
