SUMMARY:Global Bioethics: Perspectives\, Problems and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Duquesne University’s Center for Global Health Ethics and the James F. Drane Bioethics Institute at PennWest University will hold the first biannual conference on Global Bioethics from November 7-9th in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.  In the current globalized world\, many challenges and issues need solutions at a global level that transcends disciplinary\, regional and even national boundaries. The field of bioethics can play a crucial role in understanding such issues and finding reasonable and applicable solutions for them. \nThe Duquesne-PennWest Conference on Global Bioethics provides a platform for leaders\, scholars\, activists\, policymakers\, stakeholders and students to shed light on different aspects of global bioethics\, discuss their ideas and research projects\, create networks and alliances\, and learn about the groundbreaking theoretical and practical ideas in the field. All topics related to global bioethics are welcome to be shared\, analyzed and discussed at this conference\, including the ethical theories and principles guiding global bioethics; and the bioethical aspects of globalization\, the Global Governance for Health\, the role of global and international organizations\, the health consequences of Global warming\, COVID-19 pandemics\, disease control at the global level\, international research collaborations\, health inequality and other related topics. \nThe conference will start on Thursday\, November 7\, 2024\, in the early afternoon\, and it will conclude on Saturday\, November 9\, 2024 by noon. The conference program will include three plenary lectures and presentations selected from the submitted abstracts.

SUMMARY:Ethics Grand Rounds: "Professional Ethics in OB/GYN Care in the Post-Dobbs Era"
DESCRIPTION:About the Spearker: Nadia N. Sawicki\, JD is Beazley Chair in Health Law and Georgia Reithal Professor of Law at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Prof. Sawicki’s research addresses issues at the intersection of torts\, health law\, and bioethics\, including issues related to informed consent\, health care conscience laws\, reproductive justice\, end-of-life care\, and professional licensure and discipline. In 2020\, Prof. Sawiki was elected as a member of the American Law Institute. She has previously served as a member of the American Bar Association’s Special Committee on Bioethics and the Law\, and co-chair of the American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities’ Law Affinity Group. \nTalk Description: The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization abandoning federal constitutional protection for abortion will have far-reaching implications for many aspects of healthcare\, especially in the context of reproductive health. In this presentation\, I will demonstrate that Dobbs will dramatically limit pregnant patient’s rights to direct the course of their medical care. Because there will be fewer legal protections for patient autonomy after Dobbs\, it will fall to the health care profession to establish clear ethical standards and professional guidance affirming the duty to respect the right of medical self-determination during pregnancy. \nPlease join us! There will be plenty of time for questions afterwards! \nWebsite link: http://www.amc.edu/bioethics
