DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be human and created in the image of God at a time when we are being reduced to data and algorithms? \nThis conference explores why the ancient myth of Prometheus still matters for thinking about technology\, religion\, philosophy\, politics\, and what it means to be human. In Plato’s Protagoras\, Prometheus steals fire for humanity. The fire represents human skills\, technology\, and the abilities that make social life possible. These gifts help make up for what humans originally lack\, but they also raise deeper questions about human nature and humanity’s place in the world—questions that were never fully answered. \nToday\, technology is changing human life faster than ever before. It is no longer just a tool we use; it also shapes how we think about ourselves and our society. It encourages constant pressure to optimize our lives\, treats identity like something that can be bought and sold\, and promotes a managerial view of people. It also blurs the line between private and public life\, leaving many societies feeling tired and divided. \nIn this context\, the conference returns to a basic theological question: what does it mean to be human and created in the image of God at a time when people risk being reduced to data\, consumer habits\, and algorithm-like patterns shaped by both physical and digital worlds? \nBringing together scholars from theology\, philosophy\, biblical studies\, and political theory\, the conference aims to think more carefully about how technology should be used well. SUMMARY:Ethical Disobedience: Harm\, Futility\, and the Slow Code
DESCRIPTION:This session will examine the ethical status of slow codes — resuscitation attempts intentionally performed without genuine effort — in cases where CPR is futile or medically inappropriate but where implementing a DNAR order is challenging or conflict-ridden. Clinicians in such situations face a moral trilemma: perform harmful interventions\, unilaterally refuse care\, or perform a slow code. None of these is particularly ethically attractive. We will survey the longstanding bioethics consensus condemning slow codes and evaluate the arguments for and against that position. We will then consider whether slow codes might be justified as a form of ethical disobedience against legislative and judicial overreach that compels harmful care. Finally\, we will critically examine claims that time-limited trials of futile CPR represent an ethically acceptable compromise.

DESCRIPTION:The 4-day workshop will be held at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and will run from 9:00-5:00 each day. The Penn Program in Clinical Conflict Management has offered over 150 workshops and conflict resolution seminars since the program’s launch in May 2010. \nIn this Intensive\, students will: \n\nLearn how to navigate and improve challenging clinical relationships (patient-provider\, family-provider\, inter-staff conflicts)\nLearn the techniques of facilitation among a diverse set of stakeholders\nLearn to effectively manage clinical disputes among and between caregivers\, patients and surrogates through mediation\nDiscover to how to define problems and assess underlying interests to generate mutually acceptable options\nRole-play in variety of clinical situations as both disputants and mediators\nPractice mediation with professional actors\nUse video-tapes of simulations to improve mediation techniques and strengthen interpersonal skills\nReceive constructive feedback in a supportive environment\n\nThis workshop is intended for nurses\, physicians\, clergy\, social workers\, clinical ethics consultants and members of ethics committees who face clinical ethics conflicts in their role in the healthcare system. \nDescription: \nProfessional mediators possess a unique skill set applicable to the facilitation of difficult conversations between individuals in emotionally laden situations. An effective mediation process can generate solutions that address the underlying interests of all disputants and resolve conflicts that appear intractable. This skill set has increasingly been recognized as invaluable to the work of clinical ethics consultants as they navigate conflicts between and among patients\, families\, surrogates and providers. Moreover\, given wide-spread agreement that communication failures lie at the root of many clinical conflicts\, mediation values and catalyzes the effective communication of individual concerns\, values\, perspectives and feelings — all of which are essential to the clinical ethics consultation process. Rapid advancements in synthetic biology are reshaping how we approach challenges in health\, the environment\, and beyond. However\, these breakthroughs raise questions about what should be permitted and how new technologies should be regulated. To that end\, the global conversation on biotechnology must account for responsible frameworks that guide future scientific innovation. \nThe symposium convenes a diverse community of scholars and practitioners in academia\, industry\, nonprofits and government  for a deep dive into the intersection of emerging biotechnologies\, public policy\, and ethical responsibility. \nThe program is organized around two themes based on synthetic biology products: environmental and therapeutic applications of synthetic biology. The event will feature internationally recognized leaders in synthetic biology research and development\, health communication\, and ethics and public policy. Through thoughtful dialogue\, this symposium will address both the promise of scientific advancement and the challenges of misinformation\, regulation\, and public trust. \nThis event is hosted by the Baker Institute Science and Technology Policy Program in partnership with Rice Synthetic Biology Institute.
