DESCRIPTION:Shared decision but not costs: When should affordability inform prescribing? The doctor-patient relationship is grounded in the responsibility to act in the patient’s interests and welfare\, yet the high cost of many prescription drugs threatens to challenge that paradigm. SUMMARY:Tracking Engineered Microbiomes Across Time and From Space

Suggested topics include: 1) genetic interventions; 2) drug development\, evidence generation\, and regulation; 3) pediatric research; 4) clinical trial participation; 5) post-approval use of novel therapeutics. \nThe purpose of this meeting is to showcase the work of early career scholars and facilitate connections between junior scholars working in similar fields. The meeting will feature an introduction from PGTME co-chair Dr. Alison Bateman-House\, networking opportunities\, flash presentations from your fellow junior scholars\, keynote presentations from both academics and funders (to be announced)\, and an open forum to connect with other attendees. We view the terms “junior” and “early career scholar” expansively: you don’t need to have a certain degree\, title\, appointment\, etc. to participate. In this lecture\, Jennifer Molloy\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Research Professor at the University of Cambridge & Group Leader at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology\, will discuss open source as one approach to achieving these goals. SUMMARY:Why Are There So Few Genetically Engineered Microbes Approved for Use in Commercial Environmental Applications?
DESCRIPTION:The 1986 Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology\, revised in 1992 and 2017\, promulgated the tenet that organisms altered with recombinant DNA follow the same laws of physics\, chemistry\, and biology\, with no unique risks from rDNA alone. The US scientific community attested to this following Asilomar and further open discussion. The regulations evolving from statutes\, such as FIFRA\, TSCA and PPA\, however\, speak to a different narrative. Microbes modified through the use of rDNA are treated differently from their non-transformed counterparts and viewed predominantly as of higher risk to the environment and human health. In this lecture\, Chris A. SUMMARY:2026 Healthcare Ethics and Moral Distress Consultation Intensive Training Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join us November 8 through 10\, 2026\, in beautiful Charlottesville\, Virginia for our 13th annual Healthcare Ethics and Moral Distress Consultation Intensive Training Seminar. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, the grounds and gardens of the University of Virginia are the perfect setting for an immersive weekend spent developing or deepening your consultation knowledge and skills.  \nThis in-person\, intensive 3-day training program is designed for multidisciplinary practicing healthcare professionals who wish to develop or deepen their healthcare ethics and moral distress consultation knowledge and skills and prepare for the healthcare ethics consultation certification exam. The training is grounded in the ASBH core competencies for healthcare ethics consultation and will emphasize the four content domains for certification determined by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. It is the only program in the United States to offer training in Moral Distress consultation\, building on 18 years of experience at UVA Health. Participants will receive a certificate upon course completion. The course culminates with attendance at UVA’s weekly Healthcare Ethics and Moral Distress Consult Services meeting. \nSCHEDULE: The program begins at 9 am Sunday\, November 8 and ends at 2 pm on Tuesday\, November 10. Sunday and Monday are dedicated to healthcare ethics consultation. Tuesday focuses solely on moral distress consultation and can be attended independent of the rest of the program. The program will take place at the Center for Health Humanities and Ethics\, UVA West Complex\, Collins Building\, Room 5382. \nPREREQUISITES: Participants will be expected to obtain and read Core Competencies for Ethics Consultation prior to the training (available at www.asbh.org). \nMEALS: Breakfast: Sunday\, Monday\, and Tuesday\nLunch: Sunday and Tuesday.

SUMMARY:Ethical Issues in the Deliberate Release of Engineered Microbes
DESCRIPTION:New technological capabilities always introduce new ethical challenges: under what conditions should we use this technology? What ethical concerns or trade-offs does it reveal? What new obligations does it impose? In this presentation\, Lisa M. Rasmussen\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte\, will explore ethical issues arising in the deliberate release of engineered microbes. This will include a discussion of the general areas of concern\, current ethical approaches\, and a consideration of how we might proceed ethically when we are not sure of the effects of this use. \nThis event is part of the “Engineered Microbes for Environmental Release” webinar series that brings together voices from synthetic biology\, ecology\, policy\, science and technology studies\, biotechnology\, ethics\, and history to explore the social\, technological\, and environmental dimensions of these innovations. Hosted by the Baker Institute’s Science and Technology Policy Program and co-sponsored by the Rice Synthetic Biology Institute\, this webinar series was supported by a grant from Schmidt Sciences and the National Science Foundation (#2223678 & #2515431). \nThis event is free and open to the public.
