SUMMARY:Lead the Life to Which God Has Called You: On the Vocations of Christian Bioethicists and Healthcare Professionals
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Christian Bioethicists will host its next conference on March 5-7\, 2027\, fully online via Zoom. The Society has recently written and ratified a Constitution and elected its first members of the executive committee. As a Society\, we are looking to the future and thinking about direction\, purpose\, goals\, and callings. The theme of the 2027 conference of the Society for Christian Bioethicists is “Lead the Life to which God has Called You: on the vocations of Christian bioethicists and healthcare professionals.” This theme is inspired by 1 Corinthians 7:17\, which says “Let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him\, and to which God has called him” (ESV). The conference will feature a keynote address from Dr. Gilbert Meilaender (Valparaiso University) and a plenary address from Dr. Kimbell Kornu (Belmont University)\, with more speakers to be announced soon. The conference will also feature parallel paper presentations. We invite submissions of abstracts for presentations on the conference theme. We are also pleased to announce that this year’s conference will include a student essay competition \, the details of which are below. Abstracts and essay competition submissions may engage\, among other possibilities\, the following questions: \n\nWhat is the vocation of the Christian in healthcare?\nWhy do Christian bioethicists and healthcare professionals do the work that we do?\nWhat is the aim of the work of Christians in healthcare\, and what limits are imposed upon what we may do or what we may aim to accomplish?\nGiven that callings are received from others who express their needs\, needs that can be fulfilled with works of Christian love\, what are the present needs of our neighbors to which Christian bioethicists and healthcare professionals must respond? How can we respond uniquely as Christians?\nWhy do Christians need bioethicists? Why does bioethics need Christians? – How does the work of Christian bioethicists participate in the church’s ministry of the gospel of Jesus? How can bioethicists serve the church or support its witness?\nHow do Christians in healthcare incorporate faith into their thinking about their work?\nHow does one experience or discern a call to a healthcare profession?\nOther related topics might include: conscientious objection\, the purpose of medicine\, “the good”\, virtue\, best practices for Christians in healthcare\, secular/Christian or interreligious engagement\, and more.\n\nEach presenter will be given 30 minutes (20-minutes to deliver remarks and 10 minutes for Q&A with the audience\, generally). Anyone at any stage of their career may submit an abstract of ~250 words. We also welcome submissions related to any other topic that is of interest to Christian bioethicists\, even if not related to the conference theme. Anyone from anywhere in the world may submit an abstract in English for a presentation that can be delivered in English. \nThis conference provides a unique interdisciplinary platform for scholars and practitioners to share their research and engage in thoughtful dialogue with Christian bioethicists from a range of perspectives. We welcome submissions from a wide range of academic and professional fields\, including but not limited to bioethics\, clinical ethics\, medicine\, theology\, philosophy\, law\, and the social sciences. \nAccepted papers need not make explicitly Christian arguments. While the Society is committed to the Christian faith and religion in its constitution\, anyone of any faith (or none) is welcome to submit. Submissions expressing any viewpoint will be fairly considered. We believe that informed and respectful disagreement can be a benefit to all. \nThis year\, the conference will also include a student essay competition. Any student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree and who does not already possess a doctoral level degree (PhD\, MD\, JD\, etc.) may submit a completed\, original\, and unpublished essay of 4\,000-6\,000 words (not including footnotes or citations) on a topic related to the conference theme for consideration. Coauthored papers may be considered as long as all authors are eligible students. Winning papers will be recognized during the conference. All student essay competition submissions will also be considered as regular submissions and may be invited to be presented during the conference\, even if not recognized with an award. In other words\, students who submit to the essay competition do not also need to submit the same project as an abstract. \nTo submit an abstract or a student essay \, visit christianbioethicists.com. Submissions will open on November 15\, 2026. The deadline for submissions is January 1\, 2027. \nThis conference is co-sponsored by the following partners\, to whom we express our gratitude: the Ostapenko Center for Ethics in Medicine and Healthcare at Niagara University; The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity at LeTourneau University; the Theology\, Medicine\, and Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity School; and the Plunkett Centre for Ethics at the Australian Catholic University.

SUMMARY:Religion\, Capital\, and the Struggles of Moral Formation in Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Greed and profit increasingly constitute reigning ways of being and valuing in US healthcare. Within the flows and structures of capital in the US\, immoderate financial self-interest too often prevails in every sector. From pharmaceutical marketing and pricing to the profit incentives of insurers and hospitals\, research bias\, and the overuse of tests and treatments\, mammon—the worship of wealth—is pervasive. In ways big and small\, it is undermining healthcare’s ancient covenants and oaths\, its sense of mystery and ‘holy’ awe\, and the dignity of the other. Has capitalism become ‘the religion of modernity’ in healthcare\, instituting its own rituals and myths\, practices and formations\, and discourses of truth? Does the pervasiveness of its ‘rationality’ in healthcare constitute an injustice? What has it meant for the moral formations and deformations of clinicians and trainees? Indeed\, how does one struggle to be a ‘good’ healthcare professional\, to do right\, and to flourish within the hidden curricula of this rationality\, or more broadly? What wisdom and distinctive ways of being\, seeing\, speaking\, and accompanying do the communities\, institutions\, discourses\, and practices of the world’s religions offer? Or have they too become co-opted by the same commodifying forces in society?\n\nThe 2027 Conference on Medicine and Religion invites clinicians\, scholars\, clergy\, students and others to take up these and other questions at the intersection of medicine and religion. We encourage participants to address these questions and issues in light of religious traditions and practices\, particularly\, though not exclusively\, those of Judaism\, Christianity and Islam. The conference is a forum for exchanging ideas from various disciplinary perspectives\, from accounts of clinical practices to empirical research to scholarship in the humanities.

SUMMARY:Is Medicine Still a Calling?
DESCRIPTION:The conference solicits abstracts from students from any accredited medical school in the United States. Over the past eleven years\, AMSEC has become a national venue for students to discuss ethical issues in medicine. We instituted a mentorship system\, which pairs the authors of accepted abstracts with faculty mentors to help them develop their conference presentation. \nThe organizing committee invites abstracts for oral presentations on the ethical issues that arise in medical education because of one’s role as a medical student. The theme for AMSEC 2027 is “Is Medicine Still a Calling?” We invite submissions related to the conference theme and on any other topic tackling ethical issues in medical education. Potential topics include\, but are not limited to: treatment over objection\, justice and equity in medicine\, disparity in allocation of educational resources in medical school; learning on or with patients; moral distress; hierarchy in medicine.’ \nEligibility\nTo submit an abstract the author must be enrolled in an accredited medical college. Abstracts co-authored with faculty or residents will not be considered. \nSubmission Requirements \nAll submissions should include two Word documents: \n\n1. A 350-word abstract with title and no identifying information\n2. A cover page with the following information:\n1) abstract title;\n2) author name;\n3) author affiliation; and\n4) email address\n\nEmail submissions to bioethics@amc.edu.

SUMMARY:Mediation Intensive Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The 4-day workshop will be held at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and will run from 9:00-5:00 each day. The Penn Program in Clinical Conflict Management has offered over 150 workshops and conflict resolution seminars since the program’s launch in May 2010. \nIn this Intensive\, students will: \n\nLearn how to navigate and improve challenging clinical relationships (patient-provider\, family-provider\, inter-staff conflicts)\nLearn the techniques of facilitation among a diverse set of stakeholders\nLearn to effectively manage clinical disputes among and between caregivers\, patients and surrogates through mediation\nDiscover to how to define problems and assess underlying interests to generate mutually acceptable options\nRole-play in variety of clinical situations as both disputants and mediators\nPractice mediation with professional actors\nUse video-tapes of simulations to improve mediation techniques and strengthen interpersonal skills\nReceive constructive feedback in a supportive environment\n\nThis workshop is intended for nurses\, physicians\, clergy\, social workers\, clinical ethics consultants and members of ethics committees who face clinical ethics conflicts in their role in the healthcare system. \nDESCRIPTION:\nProfessional mediators possess a unique skill set applicable to the facilitation of difficult conversations between individuals in emotionally laden situations. An effective mediation process can generate solutions that address the underlying interests of all disputants and resolve conflicts that appear intractable. This skill set has increasingly been recognized as invaluable to the work of clinical ethics consultants as they navigate conflicts between and among patients\, families\, surrogates and providers. Moreover\, given wide-spread agreement that communication failures lie at the root of many clinical conflicts\, mediation values and catalyzes the effective communication of individual concerns\, values\, perspectives and feelings — all of which are essential to the clinical ethics consultation process. This hands-on Workshop introduces the principal techniques of mediation through the use of simulated role plays with a focus on conflicts caused by communication breakdowns\, highly charged value-conflicts\, and cultural differences. \nInstructor-Student ratio of 1:3. Space is limited. Students can earn Penn course credit or take the intensive as a workshop. Cost of the workshop is $2\,600\, which includes breakfast\, lunch and materials.  Tuition benefits can be applied for students taking it for Penn credit. \nWorkshop Instructors:\nAutumn Fiester\, PhD  |  Director\, Penn Program in Clinical Conflict Management; Associate Chair for Education \n Aliza Narva\, JD\, MSN\, HEC-c  |  Director\, Clinical Ethics Consult Service\, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania \n Stacy Smith\, PhD\, MA\, MLS\, HEC-c  |  Instructor\, Penn Program in Clinical Conflict Management \nMary Walton\, MBE\, MSN\, HEC-c   |  Emeritus Director\, Clinical Ethics Consult Service\, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania \nFor more information\, contact: fiester@upenn.edu
