SUMMARY:Ethical Disobedience: Harm\, Futility\, and the Slow Code
DESCRIPTION:This session will examine the ethical status of slow codes — resuscitation attempts intentionally performed without genuine effort — in cases where CPR is futile or medically inappropriate but where implementing a DNAR order is challenging or conflict-ridden. Clinicians in such situations face a moral trilemma: perform harmful interventions\, unilaterally refuse care\, or perform a slow code. None of these is particularly ethically attractive. We will survey the longstanding bioethics consensus condemning slow codes and evaluate the arguments for and against that position. We will then consider whether slow codes might be justified as a form of ethical disobedience against legislative and judicial overreach that compels harmful care. Finally\, we will critically examine claims that time-limited trials of futile CPR represent an ethically acceptable compromise.

SUMMARY:Synthetic Biology at the Intersection of Science\, Ethics\, and Policy
DESCRIPTION:Synthetic biology is an interdisciplinary field combining biological and engineering to designing and redesigning genes\, biological pathways\, or organisms to solve society’s major problems and understand biological principles. Rapid advancements in synthetic biology are reshaping how we approach challenges in health\, the environment\, and beyond. However\, these breakthroughs raise questions about what should be permitted and how new technologies should be regulated. To that end\, the global conversation on biotechnology must account for responsible frameworks that guide future scientific innovation. \nThe symposium convenes a diverse community of scholars and practitioners in academia\, industry\, nonprofits and government  for a deep dive into the intersection of emerging biotechnologies\, public policy\, and ethical responsibility. \nThe program is organized around two themes based on synthetic biology products: environmental and therapeutic applications of synthetic biology. The event will feature internationally recognized leaders in synthetic biology research and development\, health communication\, and ethics and public policy. Through thoughtful dialogue\, this symposium will address both the promise of scientific advancement and the challenges of misinformation\, regulation\, and public trust. \nThis event is hosted by the Baker Institute Science and Technology Policy Program in partnership with Rice Synthetic Biology Institute. SUMMARY:PGTME Early Career Scholars Meeting
DESCRIPTION:PGTME invites all junior scholars (broadly construed) who study ethical issues in pediatric gene therapy to submit an abstract for or register to attend this year’s Early Career Scholars Meeting. Suggested topics include: 1) genetic interventions; 2) drug development\, evidence generation\, and regulation; 3) pediatric research; 4) clinical trial participation; 5) post-approval use of novel therapeutics. \nThe purpose of this meeting is to showcase the work of early career scholars and facilitate connections between junior scholars working in similar fields. The meeting will feature an introduction from PGTME co-chair Dr. Alison Bateman-House\, networking opportunities\, flash presentations from your fellow junior scholars\, keynote presentations from both academics and funders (to be announced)\, and an open forum to connect with other attendees. We view the terms “junior” and “early career scholar” expansively: you don’t need to have a certain degree\, title\, appointment\, etc. to participate. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, the grounds and gardens of the University of Virginia are the perfect setting for an immersive weekend spent developing or deepening your consultation knowledge and skills.  \nThis in-person\, intensive 3-day training program is designed for multidisciplinary practicing healthcare professionals who wish to develop or deepen their healthcare ethics and moral distress consultation knowledge and skills and prepare for the healthcare ethics consultation certification exam. The training is grounded in the ASBH core competencies for healthcare ethics consultation and will emphasize the four content domains for certification determined by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. It is the only program in the United States to offer training in Moral Distress consultation\, building on 18 years of experience at UVA Health. Participants will receive a certificate upon course completion.
