SUMMARY:Frontiers in Synthetic Biology: SpudCells\, Mirror Life & Societal Implications
DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary advances in cell engineering and synthetic biology offer enormous potential benefits\, while raising vexing ethical and policy issues. A team at the University of Minnesota has developed SpudCell — the first synthetic cell that can grow and reproduce\, built from non-living chemicals. Scientists at Stanford and Arc Institute recently published on their successful use of AI to design new virus genomes. However\, scientists have cautioned against creating organisms with molecules that are the mirror image of the biological components of known life\, as existing organisms would have no immune defenses. Join three experts on synthetic biology\, biosecurity\, and bioethics to explore how to realize the promise of synthetic biology while controlling potential risks. \nThe webinar is free and open to the public. Note that any opinions\, findings\, and conclusions or recommendations expressed are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Consortium on Law and Values.

SUMMARY:Why Are There So Few Genetically Engineered Microbes Approved for Use in Commercial Environmental Applications?
DESCRIPTION:The 1986 Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology\, revised in 1992 and 2017\, promulgated the tenet that organisms altered with recombinant DNA follow the same laws of physics\, chemistry\, and biology\, with no unique risks from rDNA alone. The US scientific community attested to this following Asilomar and further open discussion. The regulations evolving from statutes\, such as FIFRA\, TSCA and PPA\, however\, speak to a different narrative. Microbes modified through the use of rDNA are treated differently from their non-transformed counterparts and viewed predominantly as of higher risk to the environment and human health. In this lecture\, Chris A. Wozniak\, Ph.D.\, Wozniak Biopesticide Consulting and formerly at the Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division in the US Environmental Protection Agency\, will discuss how this has resulted in the diminution of commercialization of many promising microbes due to fears of public acceptance and regulatory approval. \nThis event is part of the “Engineered Microbes for Environmental Release” webinar series that brings together voices from synthetic biology\, ecology\, policy\, science and technology studies\, biotechnology\, ethics\, and history to explore the social\, technological\, and environmental dimensions of these innovations. Hosted by the Baker Institute’s Science and Technology Policy Program and co-sponsored by the Rice Synthetic Biology Institute\, this webinar series was supported by a grant from Schmidt Sciences and the National Science Foundation (#2223678 & #2515431). \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Ethical Issues in the Deliberate Release of Engineered Microbes
DESCRIPTION:New technological capabilities always introduce new ethical challenges: under what conditions should we use this technology? What ethical concerns or trade-offs does it reveal? What new obligations does it impose? In this presentation\, Lisa M. Rasmussen\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte\, will explore ethical issues arising in the deliberate release of engineered microbes. This will include a discussion of the general areas of concern\, current ethical approaches\, and a consideration of how we might proceed ethically when we are not sure of the effects of this use.

SUMMARY:Rolling Back Clean Air: How Relaxed PM₂.₅ Standards Threaten Health Gains\, Widen Inequities\, and Strain Care
DESCRIPTION:This Grand Rounds explains how regulation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has produced substantial public‑health improvements in the United States and why weakening those standards risks reversing those gains. The session briefly reviews PM2.5 sources\, health effects\, and the regulatory history behind observed declines in pollution and disease. Evidence projecting the consequences of relaxed standards is then discussed with respect to widened exposure and health inequities in historically marginalized communities\, and higher health‑care utilization and costs that disproportionately strain safety‑net providers. The presentation concludes with potential policy actions to prevent harm\, mitigate inequities\, and support evidence‑based air‑quality protections.

SUMMARY:Unpacking Bedside Bioethics Ethical Issues in Posted Behavior Signs
DESCRIPTION:There has been a proliferation of posted behavior signs over the last five years. They are now ubiquitous in both inpatient and outpatient settings and across pediatric\, adult\, and allied health practices. Named as notices for “Patients and Visitors\,” these signs identify a range of conduct\, from clinical noncompliance\, use of profanity\, and raised voices to acts or threats of physical violence. While these signs may offer a tangible signal from institutional leadership to staff that disruptive behavior is unacceptable\, there is no empirical evidence that they are effective in reducing workplace violence or verbal attacks. Aside from the problem of efficacy\, I argue that posted behavior signs are ethically troubling for the way they treat patients and families and for the impact they can have on them. I identify four distinct ethical concerns with these signs\, which I believe require either their removal or their substantial modification.

SUMMARY:Ethics of End-of-Life Care: Contributions from the Arts and Humanities
DESCRIPTION:Care for the dying and their loved ones is a most rewarding but also challenging endeavor. In this seminar\, we enter into dialogue with the arts and humanities to gain new insights about the human condition\, find meaning in the final phase of life\, and achieve a truly dignified death.

SUMMARY:Is Medicine Still a Calling?
DESCRIPTION:The conference solicits abstracts from students from any accredited medical school in the United States. Over the past eleven years\, AMSEC has become a national venue for students to discuss ethical issues in medicine. We instituted a mentorship system\, which pairs the authors of accepted abstracts with faculty mentors to help them develop their conference presentation. \nThe organizing committee invites abstracts for oral presentations on the ethical issues that arise in medical education because of one’s role as a medical student. The theme for AMSEC 2027 is “Is Medicine Still a Calling?” We invite submissions related to the conference theme and on any other topic tackling ethical issues in medical education. Potential topics include\, but are not limited to: treatment over objection\, justice and equity in medicine\, disparity in allocation of educational resources in medical school; learning on or with patients; moral distress; hierarchy in medicine.’ \nEligibility\nTo submit an abstract the author must be enrolled in an accredited medical college. Abstracts co-authored with faculty or residents will not be considered. \nSubmission Requirements \nAll submissions should include two Word documents: \n\n1. A 350-word abstract with title and no identifying information\n2. A cover page with the following information:\n1) abstract title;\n2) author name;\n3) author affiliation; and\n4) email address\n\nEmail submissions to bioethics@amc.edu.
