SUMMARY:Ethics Grand Rounds: The Geneticization of Education and Its Bioethical Implications
DESCRIPTION:For under $10\, direct-to-consumer genetic tests provide reports on educational traits like intelligence and math ability\, placing them on a genomic spectrum. This technology\, while publicly accessible and cost-effective\, has prompted growing concern about its societal impacts and the potential geneticization of education\, where educational abilities are increasingly perceived as merely genetic. In this session\, Division of Ethics Assistant Professor Lucas Matthews\, PhD\, and Division of Law\, Ethics\, and Psychiatry Director Paul Appelbaum\, MD\, will explore the bioethical implications of this new technology\, and discuss the future of equity in education. \n\n\nEvent Contact Information:\nDavid Lamb\ndl3580@cumc.columbia.edu

SUMMARY:2025 Harvard Surgical Ethics Virtual Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Surgical Ethics Working Group (SEWG) at Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics is offering the 2025 Harvard Surgical Ethics Virtual Conference Series that will explore where ethical decision-making intersects with surgical practice. Session topics will include teaching bioethics\, transplant ethics\, global surgery\, and AI in surgery. The need for ethics education and expertise is driven by rapid advancements in technology\, evolving surgical practices\, teaching methods\, and global disparities in surgical care\, leading to more difficult ethical challenges for healthcare professionals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse Format \nThis virtual conference series will be held weekly on Mondays over four weeks in April 2025. Each session will run from 7:00-9:00pm Eastern Time and will feature a different topic exploring timely and\, in some cases\, controversial ethical topics in surgery. Session topics and dates are as follows: \n\n“Teaching Bioethics” on April 7\, 2025\n“Controversies in Transplant Ethics” on April 14\n“Ethical Challenges in Global Health and Surgery” on April 21\n“Implementation of AI in Surgery: Ethical Considerations” on April 28\n\n  \nEach session will include three short talks (20-25 minutes each) by expert faculty from the Center for Bioethics and others. This will be followed by a moderated question and answer period with the speakers. The interactive format is designed to encourage participant engagement and address their specific questions. Presentations will be available on-demand for all paid attendees for six weeks after the conference. \nAt the end of each session\, participants will be required to complete a short online series of self-assessment questions. The course aims to enable participants to critically assess and apply ethical principles in their own practice. The website will be updated over the next few weeks to include a detailed schedule featuring exciting topics and speakers.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccreditation \nIn support of improving patient care\, Boston Children’s Hospital is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)\, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)\, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)\, to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. See site for details.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObjectives \nUpon completion of this course\, participants will: \n\nUtilize case studies\, ethical theories and frameworks\, and artificial intelligence for the development and delivery of surgical ethics education\, ensuring that the methods promote integrity\, professionalism\, and respect for persons.\nCritically evaluate ethical dilemmas in transplantation including normothermic regional perfusion for organ donation\, vascularized composite allotransplants including uterus transplants\, and the use of brain-dead donors as experimental subjects for xenotransplantation using case-based discussions and current guidelines.\nAnalyze ethical challenges in global surgery with a focus on global health priorities and the complex effects of the loss of local expertise on efforts to improve surgical access in low-and-middle income countries to order to augment decision-making in resource-limited settings.\nUnderstand and assess the impact of artificial intelligence on clinical decision making\, identify potential risks and benefits\, where it might most easily and appropriately be deployed\, and propose strategies to ethically integrate AI into surgical practice.\nDevelop strategies for implementing ethical guidelines into daily surgical practice by compiling knowledge from case studies\, panel discussions\, and journals\, aimed at improving patient care and professional accountability.\n\n  \nRegistration \nTo register\, please visit the site for details and complete the online form. If this is your first time registering for a course at Boston Children’s Hospital\, you will need to create an account. Please use an email address that you check frequently\, as it will be used to send important information about the course. \nPre-registration is required. SUMMARY:Doctor\, Will You Pray for Me? Medicine\, Chaplains\, and Healing the Whole Person
DESCRIPTION:About the Talk \nBased on in-depth research\, this talk explores how patients today from varied backgrounds—from evangelical to atheist\, agnostic\, and “nothing in particular”—confront spiritual\, existential\, and religious challenges\, and how hospital chaplains often help. These spiritual care providers play critical roles assisting patients\, families\, and staff\, but knowledge about them and how they assist patients remains relatively low. This talk presents the profound insights they have to share. \nAbout the Speaker \nRobert Klitzman\, MD\, is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Joseph Mailman School of Public Health\, and the Director of the Online and In-person Bioethics Masters and Certificate Programs at Columbia University. He has written over 190 scientific journal articles\, ten books\, and numerous chapters on critical issues in bioethics regarding doctor-patient relationships and communication\, research\, genetics\, mental health\, pandemics\, and other areas. His books include Doctor\, Will You Pray for Me?: Medicine\, Chaplains and Healing the Whole Person and When Doctors Become Patients. \nDr. Klitzman has received numerous awards for his work\, including fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation\, the Russell Sage Foundation\, the Commonwealth Fund\, the Aaron Diamond Foundation\, the Hastings Center\, and the Rockefeller Foundation. He has been a gubernatorial appointee to the Empire State Stem Cell Commission\, and the Ethics Working Group of the HIV Prevention Trials Network\, and served on the U.S. Department of Defense’s Research Ethics Advisory Panel. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association\, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, and a regular contributor to The New York Times\, CNN\, and Psychology Today. \nThe lecture may be attended virtually at this Zoom link: https://columbiacuimc.zoom.us/j/98286753954

Hall\, Professor\, University of Alberta \nI earned a B.A. in Philosophy at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland\, Virginia\, where I was also the first student to graduate with a certificate in what was then called Women’s Studies. I earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy at State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton. Prior to coming to the University of Alberta\, I was Professor of Philosophy and a faculty affiliate in the Gender\, Women’s\, and Sexuality Studies and Appalachian Studies programs at Appalachian State University\, where I also served as Humanities Council Coordinator (2012-2014) and Director of the Gender\, Women’s\, and Sexuality Studies Program (2014-2017). Throughout my career\, I have been interested in efforts to enhance equity\, diversity\, and inclusiveness in the profession. For example\, I have served as Co-Chair of the Advisory Board for Philosophy in an Inclusive (PIKSI) Key and as an inaugural member of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy (SPEP) Committee on Accessibility\, Disability\, and Inclusion. I am excited to join the University of Alberta’s Department of Philosophy as Professor of Philosophy and to serve as Interim Director of the Institute for Intersectionality Studies. If I had to choose one thing that I have enjoyed about my career so far\, it’s the opportunity to continue to learn and think with others about matters of importance in our lives and world. \nEvent link: https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/5d676b16-b49d-493a-808a-138fc0e1570e@dd246e4a-5434-4e15-8ae3-91ad9797b209

SUMMARY:ELSI Friday Forum: Enhancing Genetic Screening Access through Community Partnerships in the Cleveland African American Prostate Cancer Project
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 03/14/25 at 12pm ET for the next ELSI Friday Forum: Enhancing Genetic Screening Access through Community Partnerships in the Cleveland African American Prostate Cancer Project\, with our speakers: \n\nSydney N. Evans\, MSW\, C-CHW\nErika S. Trapl\, PhD\nModerated by Marsha Michie\, PhD\n\nRegistration link: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/T926pH_NTLeL-DBkQ1kzAA  \nAbstract: Genetic screening is crucial for identifying genetic risk factors for disease\, but marginalized groups often have low participation due to lack of access\, awareness\, and mistrust of healthcare systems. There is a need for intentional collaboration with community partners to address these concerns and allow community voices to actively participate in the design and implementation of programs. The Cleveland African American Prostate Cancer Project (CAAPP) is a partnership of academics\, clinicians\, and community partners working together to combine prostate cancer and genetic screening\, leveraging local barbershops as trusted hubs. Barbers were trained as health advisors\, connecting Black men over 40 with screening services. This session will explore how building relationships\, leveraging existing clinical and community partners\, and utilizing community health navigators can overcome barriers like trust\, cost\, and data ownership\, increasing participation and improving preventive health measures in marginalized communities.

SUMMARY:Professionalism & the Future of Medicine: What role does the health care delivery organization play?
DESCRIPTION:Professionalism is the basis of medicine’s contract with society. However\, increasingly\, genuine medical professionalism seems to have come under threat as market and bureaucratic forces shape the practice and delivery of medicine. How has the health care organization contributed to this environment\, and how should the health care organization operate in relation to medical professionalism? What mechanisms might facilitate organizational accountability to professionalism? Join us for a seminar and discussion exploring concepts of organizational professionalism and the future of medicine. \nFeaturing Fred Hafferty\, PhD and Tom Nasca\, MD\, MACP\, and moderated by Kelsey Berry\, PhD.
