SUMMARY:Unpacking Bedside Bioethics: Do You Believe in Miracles? Productively Engaging Patients’ Hopes for a Miracle
DESCRIPTION:How should clinicians respond to a patient’s or family’s hope for a “miracle”? What if the family’s hope for a miracle means continuing on a recovery-focused path even when clinicians believe recovery is not possible and further life-sustaining treatment is non-beneficial? This presentation will frame the discussion of miracle language and offer practical guidance on working with patients and families who invoke miracle language during a patient’s hospital stay. \nLearning Objectives: After this webinar\, attendees will be able to: \n\nClassify and distinguish between the most common ways patients/families use miracle language.\nDescribe the ethical tensions that emerge when families request that clinicians continue non-beneficial care in the hopes a miracle will occur.\nIdentify a set of strategies for productively engaging with patients/families who expect miracles.\n\n\nSpeaker(s)\n\n\nDevan Stahl\, PhD\, HEC-C\,  is an Associate Professor of Bioethics and Religion at Baylor University and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Education\, Innovation\, and Technology at the Baylor College of Medicine. She specializes theological bioethics\, disability ethics\, and the visual arts within medicine. Dr. Stahl volunteers as a clinical ethicist consultant for the Supportive and Palliative Care Team at Baylor\, Scott\, and White Hillcrest and has trained as a hospital chaplain. She also co-hosts the popular bioethics podcast\, Bioethics for the People. \nTrevor M. Bibler\, PhD\, HEC-C\, is an Associate Professor of medicine at the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine and the Bioethics Program Director at Houston Methodist Hospital. He is a clinical ethicist with a background in religious studies. Dr. Bibler was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Clinical Bioethics at BCM and Houston Methodist Hospital from July 2014-March 2016. In 2014\, he earned his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Vanderbilt University. He teaches a variety of audiences and writes on religion and medicine\, methods in clinical ethics\, and novel clinical technologies.

SUMMARY:CARE Panel: Research Ethics in Context of War
DESCRIPTION:The ethical complexities of conducting research in conflict zones raise important questions about researcher responsibilities and participant protections. Join us for a panel discussion where we will explore a number of questions concerning these issues: How do we\, or can we\, draw boundaries about what counts as a conflict or war setting for research purposes? How should we think about the priorities of research in conflict situations? Are participants in such research vulnerable\, requiring special protections? What are there special duties on the part of researchers to provide ancillary and humanitarian services as they conduct research? \nFeaturing Panelists:  \nHannah Wild\, MD (Resident in Department of Surgery\, UW Medicine)\nDonal O’Mathuna MA\, PhD (Professor in the College of Nursing\, OSU) \nErin Lin\, PhD (Associate Professor in Political Science\, OSU) \nTeri Murphy\, PhD (Associate Director for Peacebuilding Research at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies\, OSU) \nThis event will be presented with automated closed captions. If you wish to request traditional CART services or other accommodations\, please contact Layne Garrelts at garrelts.6@osu.edu. Requests made by 10 days prior to this event will generally allow us to provide seamless access\, but the university will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.

SUMMARY:Ethics in America’s Epidemic: Navigating Solutions and Hope in the Opioid Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Opioid use and the addiction that can follow have\, in recent decades\, become an enduring and profound public health crisis. How did this problem reach epidemic proportions\, and where does it stand today? What tensions define debates about how to mitigate the drugs’ harms? How can we most effectively treat addiction\, especially in light of stigma and disparities? And how can we begin to repair communities that these drugs have impacted? \nBeth Macy\, bestselling author of Dopesick and Raising Lazarus: Hope\, Justice\, and the Future of America’s Overdose Crisis\, will discuss the US opioid epidemic and the ethical issues that accompany it\, including how we can move forward from the crisis and rebuild affected communities. Ms. Macy will be joined in conversation by Perri Peltz\, a journalist\, public health advocate\, and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker known for the HBO documentary Warning: This Drug May Kill You\, which explores the devastating effects of opioid addiction and its relationship to big pharma. \nThe Greenwall Foundation is excited to partner with New York University’s School of Global Public Health to host this year’s William C. Stubing Memorial Lecture in person in New York City and online. The event will begin with a reception at 5:30pm ET\, followed by the moderated conversation beginning at 6:30pm ET. An audience question-and-answer session will follow. Register to attend the event in person or online here; registration is free and open to all\, but in-person seating is limited.

SUMMARY:Changing Life as We Know It – Exploring the Role of Genetic Modification and Our Understanding of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:What are the ethical issues surrounding genetic modification? How do we define – and regulate – the line between benefit and harm? In what ways do these possibilities force us to make decisions about the value of life and impose judgments about what makes a life worth living – or even what is considered “normal”? We will discuss an example in history illustrative of the ways in which assigning genetic value engendered horrific results\, wherein Nazi eugenicists and government policy makers identified those considered a genetic and financial burden on the population – and aimed through sterilization and\, even (euphemistically)\, euthanasia to eliminate “life unworthy of life”. In what ways does this history caution us? We will focus on several scenarios wherein genetic modification presents complicated questions around intended and unintended possibilities and consequences – and ultimately how we understand what it means to be human. \nThe program will serve to examine the ethical issues not just within medicine\, but implicated within theology (and therefore the clergy)\, business (the ethical implications of commercialization)\, law (exploring the legal/regulatory roles\, including recognizing the limitations imposed by the structural irrelevance of national borders)\, journalism (how it is described and written about will be fundamentally important in shaping understanding)\, and advances and uses of technology. \nVardit Ravitsky\, CEO of The Hastings Center\, will be the keynote speaker\, and the program will include panel discussions with leading bioethicists and FASPE alumni. \nThe Symposium will be held on Saturday\, November 16\, from 9 am to 6 pm at the offices of Holland & Knight in Manhattan. Registration is required to attend this event; please reserve your seat now by completing the form below if you plan to join us! \nRegister @ https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScsxERhF1jK8SyzeU79ss-xtT4TgmYlQDMdMLC_-UeRnNRzwQ/viewform

However\, the politicization of vaccines has resulted in increased vaccine hesitancy in the U.S. and policies that exacerbate this issue. \nAt the 2024 Texas Vaccine Policy Symposium\, researchers and stakeholders from across the state will discuss the impact of vaccines in Texas and the challenges ahead as we look toward the 89th Texas legislative session\, which starts in January 2025. Speakers will include vaccine scholar Dr. Saad Omer\, dean of the Peter O’Donnell Jr. School of Public Health at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center\, who will discuss the impact of vaccines on public health and ways to improve access\, and Michael Emerson\, the Baker Institute’s Chavanne Fellow in Religion and Public Policy\, who will discuss how vaccine advocacy should be an integral part of religious faith\, to help others who are less fortunate. In addition\, Texas State Representative Ann Johnson will comment on major issues and challenges in the upcoming state legislative session. The event will feature ways to uncouple vaccines from politics and how to effectively advocate for policies that can increase access to vaccines for those who need them most. \nThis event is co-organized by the Baker Institute Center for Health and Biosciences\, and The Immunization Partnership (TIP)\, with support from Rice University’s Creative Ventures Fund: Conference and Workshop grant. \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n  \nRSVP Here: \nhttps://www.bakerinstitute.org/event/2024-texas-vaccine-policy-symposium

SUMMARY:ELSI Friday Forum: Material (Mis)Identities: Art\, Genes and Ethics
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, November 8 at 12pm ET for ELSI Friday Forum: Material (Mis)Identities: Art\, Genes and Ethics\, with speakers:\n\n\n\nLucy Kim\, MFA\, Artist\, Associate Professor in Art and Painting\, Boston University\n\n\nPaul Vanouse\, MFA\, Artist\, SUNY Distinguished Professor\, Director of Coalesce Center for Biological Art\, University of Buffalo\n\n\nModerated by Rachel Adams\, PhD\, Professor of English and Comparative Literature\, Columbia University\n\n\nHow can genetically-incorporated art examine\, highlight\, and challenge existing social constructs such as the formation of racial identity? This ELSI Friday Forum will explore this question\, focusing on the intersection between art and genetics. Panelist\, Lucy Kim\, Associate Professor in Art and Painting\, will discuss a unique process she created to use melanin from genetically-modified bacteria to develop images. This process of screen printing with melanin raises questions about how race is ascribed\, its meaning\, and connection to something as arbitrary as pigment. Panelist\, Paul Vanouse\, Professor of Art\, will discuss his interactive biomedia installation in which extracted DNA samples “run” through gel electrophoresis to examine the racial identity of his multi-racial family’s Jamaican descent. Moderated by Rachel Adams\, Professor of English and Comparative Literature\, join us as we discuss the intersection between art and genetics.

SUMMARY:Ethics Grand Rounds: "Professional Ethics in OB/GYN Care in the Post-Dobbs Era"
DESCRIPTION:About the Spearker: Nadia N. Sawicki\, JD is Beazley Chair in Health Law and Georgia Reithal Professor of Law at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Prof. Sawicki’s research addresses issues at the intersection of torts\, health law\, and bioethics\, including issues related to informed consent\, health care conscience laws\, reproductive justice\, end-of-life care\, and professional licensure and discipline. In 2020\, Prof. Sawiki was elected as a member of the American Law Institute. She has previously served as a member of the American Bar Association’s Special Committee on Bioethics and the Law\, and co-chair of the American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities’ Law Affinity Group. \nTalk Description: The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization abandoning federal constitutional protection for abortion will have far-reaching implications for many aspects of healthcare\, especially in the context of reproductive health. In this presentation\, I will demonstrate that Dobbs will dramatically limit pregnant patient’s rights to direct the course of their medical care. Because there will be fewer legal protections for patient autonomy after Dobbs\, it will fall to the health care profession to establish clear ethical standards and professional guidance affirming the duty to respect the right of medical self-determination during pregnancy. \nPlease join us! There will be plenty of time for questions afterwards! \nWebsite link: http://www.amc.edu/bioethics

SUMMARY:Ethics Grand Rounds: Reimagining Rural Health Equity: Understanding Disparities And Advancing Rural Policy\, Practice\, And Research
DESCRIPTION:Decades of underinvestment in rural communities\, health care\, and public health institutions left rural America uniquely vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time\, the pandemic prompted creative actions to meet immediate health and social needs and illuminated opportunities to address long standing rural health disparities. Acting on these lessons is critical to narrowing rural health disparities. This talk discusses the recent Health Affairs commentary\, “Reimagining Rural Health Equity: Understanding Disparities And Orienting Policy\, Practice\, And Research In Rural America” and offers principles for addressing the rural health disparities. \nLearning Objectives:  After this webinar\, attendees will be able to: \n\nDescribe some of the major drivers of rural health disparities.\nDefine rural health equity.\nDiscuss the role of diverse methods\, including qualitative and community-based research\, in addressing rural health disparities.\n\nThis is an event of the Office of Academic Clinical Affairs (OACA)\, hosted by the Center for Bioethics\, and co-sponsored by the following U of MN Units: Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity\, School of Public Health; College of Pharmacy; Medical School; Program in Health Disparities Research\, Medical School; School of Dentistry; School of Public Health; School of Nursing and The Rural Health Research Center. \nSpeaker(s)\n\n\nAnne Sosin\, MPH\, is a public health practitioner and researcher at Dartmouth College. She has more than 15 years of experience leading global health and health equity programs at the international\, national\, and local level. Her current research focuses on rural health equity\, public health policy\, and homelessness in Northern New England. Anne serves as a lecturer in the Departments of Anthropology and Geography at Dartmouth. She holds a BA from Dartmouth College and a MPH from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. \nElizabeth Carpenter-Song\, PhD\, is a medical and psychological anthropologist at Dartmouth College. Her research strives to center the lived experiences of rural community members marginalized by poverty\, housing insecurity\, mental illness\, and substance use. Through ethnographic methods\, she engages with people and communities to learn about lived experiences of illness\, suffering\, and experiences navigating through complex landscapes of care. In partnership with people with lived experience\, direct service providers\, and researchers\, she aims to translate insights from close attention to families’ lived experiences in rural New England into actionable recommendations for change to improve health and wellbeing in the region. She holds a BA from Dartmouth College and a PhD from Case Western Reserve University.

SUMMARY:Call for Abstracts for the 19th International Conference on Clinical Ethics and Consultation (ICCEC)
DESCRIPTION:The 19th International Conference on Clinical Ethics and Consultation (ICCEC) will be held in Lausanne – Switzerland\, on June 5-7\, 2025\, with a day of pre-conference events on June 4. The congress will be placed under the following theme: \n“Plurality\, Power\, and Patient Care: The Socio-Political Dimensions of Clinical Ethics” \nClinical ethics consultation (HEC)\, or healthcare ethics consultation\, responds to moral uncertainty\, plurality\, and value conflicts in healthcare. In doing so\, it transcends the borders of healthcare and touches on contentious issues of societal and political importance\, such as violence\, migration\, gender identity\, artificial intelligence\, or climate change. Good clinical ethics must consider these broader socio-political issues\, and clinical ethics professionals may\, in turn\, contribute an interesting view on these socio-political debates. \nThe International Conference on Clinical Ethics and Consultation (ICCEC) is a congress series focusing on the exchange of professional experience and scientific insights on clinical ethics across the globe. It is not linked to an association or society but driven by the enthusiasm of individuals and institutions in the field of clinical ethics. Founded by George Agich (USA) and Stella Reiter-Theil (Switzerland)\, its first conference took place in 2003 in Cleveland\, Ohio\, USA. Since then\, the ICCEC has been organized almost annually by institutions in North America\, Europe\, Asia\, South America\, and Africa. The ICCEC series is currently co-led by Katherine Wasson (Chicago) and Ralf J. Jox (Lausanne). \nAbstracts can be submitted until Friday\, 25 October 2024\, 11.59 pm CEST.\n\n\nMore information and submission at www.iccec2025.org .

SUMMARY:Doctor\, Will You Pray For Me? Medicine\, Chaplains\, and Healing the Whole Person
DESCRIPTION:The modern world faces religious\, spiritual and existential quandaries\, as new technologies redefine the beginnings and ends of life. Excruciating choices arise about when to turn off the machines – whether and when we should “play God.” The COVID-19 pandemic made these dilemmas ever more acute. Increasingly\, however\, public discourse on religion and spirituality is polarized\, with evangelicals on one side and vehement atheists on the other. \nThe book explores how patients and families struggle to make sense of serious disease and threats of death and other medical crises\, seeking hope\, purpose and larger connections beyond themselves. Physicians and other clinical staff are frequently uncomfortable with these issues\, and chaplains have been filling the void\, developing valuable approaches and insights. Most Americans will die in hospitals or nursing homes\, and face existential and spiritual quandaries. Many of their prior religious and spiritual beliefs will fall short\, and chaplains will often be the ones to assist\, partly by reframing narratives and understandings of illness and spirituality. Yet people often know little\, if anything\, about these professionals. Klitzman presents stories about the spiritual lives of patients and explores the role of chaplains – who they are\, what they do and the challenges they face. \nDrawing on in-depth interviews and the author’s personal experiences\, Doctor\, Will You Pray for Me? provides vital information that can assist in medical care decisions. Dr. Klitzman argues that a better understanding of the relationship between these realms will enable more holistic and humane treatment of patients. \nFor more information about this event\, please contact Athina Fontenot at af3018@columbia.edu. \nFor additional information about program offerings at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies\, please contact an Admissions Counselor at 212-854-9666 or inquire@sps.columbia.edu
