In 2020\, Prof. Sawiki was elected as a member of the American Law Institute. She has previously served as a member of the American Bar Association’s Special Committee on Bioethics and the Law\, and co-chair of the American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities’ Law Affinity Group. \nTalk Description: The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization abandoning federal constitutional protection for abortion will have far-reaching implications for many aspects of healthcare\, especially in the context of reproductive health. DESCRIPTION:Decades of underinvestment in rural communities\, health care\, and public health institutions left rural America uniquely vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time\, the pandemic prompted creative actions to meet immediate health and social needs and illuminated opportunities to address long standing rural health disparities. Acting on these lessons is critical to narrowing rural health disparities. Anne serves as a lecturer in the Departments of Anthropology and Geography at Dartmouth. She holds a BA from Dartmouth College and a MPH from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. \nElizabeth Carpenter-Song\, PhD\, is a medical and psychological anthropologist at Dartmouth College. Her research strives to center the lived experiences of rural community members marginalized by poverty\, housing insecurity\, mental illness\, and substance use. Through ethnographic methods\, she engages with people and communities to learn about lived experiences of illness\, suffering\, and experiences navigating through complex landscapes of care. In partnership with people with lived experience\, direct service providers\, and researchers\, she aims to translate insights from close attention to families’ lived experiences in rural New England into actionable recommendations for change to improve health and wellbeing in the region. She holds a BA from Dartmouth College and a PhD from Case Western Reserve University.

DESCRIPTION:The 19th International Conference on Clinical Ethics and Consultation (ICCEC) will be held in Lausanne – Switzerland\, on June 5-7\, 2025\, with a day of pre-conference events on June 4. The congress will be placed under the following theme: \n“Plurality\, Power\, and Patient Care: The Socio-Political Dimensions of Clinical Ethics” \nClinical ethics consultation (HEC)\, or healthcare ethics consultation\, responds to moral uncertainty\, plurality\, and value conflicts in healthcare. In doing so\, it transcends the borders of healthcare and touches on contentious issues of societal and political importance\, such as violence\, migration\, gender identity\, artificial intelligence\, or climate change. Good clinical ethics must consider these broader socio-political issues\, and clinical ethics professionals may\, in turn\, contribute an interesting view on these socio-political debates. \nThe International Conference on Clinical Ethics and Consultation (ICCEC) is a congress series focusing on the exchange of professional experience and scientific insights on clinical ethics across the globe. It is not linked to an association or society but driven by the enthusiasm of individuals and institutions in the field of clinical ethics. Founded by George Agich (USA) and Stella Reiter-Theil (Switzerland)\, its first conference took place in 2003 in Cleveland\, Ohio\, USA. Since then\, the ICCEC has been organized almost annually by institutions in North America\, Europe\, Asia\, South America\, and Africa. The ICCEC series is currently co-led by Katherine Wasson (Chicago) and Ralf J. DESCRIPTION:The modern world faces religious\, spiritual and existential quandaries\, as new technologies redefine the beginnings and ends of life. Excruciating choices arise about when to turn off the machines – whether and when we should “play God.” The COVID-19 pandemic made these dilemmas ever more acute. Increasingly\, however\, public discourse on religion and spirituality is polarized\, with evangelicals on one side and vehement atheists on the other. \nThe book explores how patients and families struggle to make sense of serious disease and threats of death and other medical crises\, seeking hope\, purpose and larger connections beyond themselves. Physicians and other clinical staff are frequently uncomfortable with these issues\, and chaplains have been filling the void\, developing valuable approaches and insights. Most Americans will die in hospitals or nursing homes\, and face existential and spiritual quandaries. Many of their prior religious and spiritual beliefs will fall short\, and chaplains will often be the ones to assist\, partly by reframing narratives and understandings of illness and spirituality. Yet people often know little\, if anything\, about these professionals. Klitzman presents stories about the spiritual lives of patients and explores the role of chaplains – who they are\, what they do and the challenges they face. \nDrawing on in-depth interviews and the author’s personal experiences\, Doctor\, Will You Pray for Me? provides vital information that can assist in medical care decisions. SUMMARY:Call for Papers for 2025 Catholic Social Tradition Conference: "Signs of the Times: Interdisciplinary Responses to Religious Nationalism"
DESCRIPTION:This 2025 CST conference will remember the 60th anniversary of two significant Vatican II texts\, Gaudium et spes (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) and Dignitatis humanae (Declaration on Religious Freedom). Released on the final day of Vatican II\, these texts together invited serious consideration of the role of the church and other religious communities in relation to the state. \nThis year’s CST conference takes up Vatican II’s invitation to discern “the signs of the times” and to attend to the roles of church and state within civil society with a view toward the common good. These central CST themes warrant further exploration as Christian and other forms of religious nationalism represent a significant sign of the current time in particular national and international contexts. \nThis interdisciplinary conference invites historical\, constructive\, and comparative approaches as we consider the ecumenical\, interfaith\, and transdisciplinary challenges of religious nationalism. \nFor example\, what is the history of Christian nationalism in the United States and how is it related to similar movements in other parts of the world? What are the scriptural and theological resources available to analyze these expressions of Christian and national identity? To what degree and under what forms are the academy and the Christian churches complicit with the history and recent expressions of white Christian nationalism? What are the possible connections between the reemergence of various forms of religious nationalism with economic changes\, poverty\, inequality\, and environmental degradation? How has the rise of these political ideologies been facilitated by changes in laws and institutional structures? What are the implications of Christian and other forms of religious nationalism for the relationship of religious bodies and the state in civil society? What are the pedagogical challenges across the disciplines in addressing the significance of Christian and religious nationalism? Normatively\, what options for constructive engagement and responses emerge from our shared consideration of these questions? \nCall for Papers\nDeadline: November 1\, 2024 \nProposals for concurrent sessions that address the foregoing questions and related issues from a particular disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective are welcome. Especially encouraged are those proposals exploring the practical issues arising in educational contexts and in various social and political contexts. For example\, proposals might address responses to religious nationalism in religiously affiliated educational institutions\, the influence of technological changes on the dissemination of religious nationalist ideas\, or the present-day nationalist discourses in inter-religious spaces nationally and/or internationally. \nBoth individual paper and panel proposals are welcome. \nAcceptance of proposals will be communicated by December 1\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, October 11 at 12pm ET for ELSI Friday Forum: The Summer internship for INdigenous peoples in Genomics (SING) – Beyond Settler Science\, with speakers:\n\n\nElizabeth Nelson\, PhD\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Anthropology\,  Southern Methodist University\n\n\nJoseph Yracheta\, MS\, DrPHc\, Executive Director and Vice President\, Native BioData Consortium\n\n\nModerated by Kim TallBear\, PhD\, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples\, Technoscience\, and Society\, University of Alberta\n\n\n\nScientists from dominant genomic institutions are beginning to recognize the ways in which they have been and continue to be non-inclusive and harmful to marginalized communities\, especially to Indigenous groups. In response\, these groups have established programs worldwide that are based on Indigenous knowledge\, expertise\, and governance to move toward decolonization of genomics. These programs are designed to disrupt dominant approaches\, build Indigenous capacity and scientific literacy\, including laboratory\, classroom\, and field training in genomic sciences\, ethical and social implications\, and Indigenous knowledge. As such data has become the targets of commercialization and Native peoples are seen as bioproperty\, international and intersectional concepts of law have increasingly been one of SING’s points of discussion. This approach in SING goes beyond simply integrating Indigenous perspectives; it actively develops and supports Indigenous science. By doing so\, it aims to provide effective and sociopolitically appropriate solutions to today’s most pressing scientific and ethical questions. This session will describe the Summer internship for INdigenous peoples in Genomics (SING)\, the distinctive features of their educational programs and related research\, and community collaborations that aim to decolonize and make useful genomics for Indigenous Peoples.

DESCRIPTION:A symposium hosted by the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy and the Institute for Translational Medicine & Therapeutics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. \nSeveral high-profile examples of research misconduct have recently come to light\, amidst waning public trust in science. The issues are not new\, although there are now novel tools for identifying misconduct\, proliferating platforms for discussing allegations and publicizing concerns\, and growing unease about politically motivated misconduct allegations. In addition\, the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Research Integrity recently proposed new regulations to revise the Public Health Service Policies on Research Misconduct\, with a final rule expected this year. Against this churning backdrop\, how should institutional stakeholders – including universities and publishers – address concerns about research misconduct\, from prevention to response? DESCRIPTION:Herald Schmidt\, PhD\, MA\, is an Associate Professor of Medical Ethics and Health Policy\, a Research Associate at the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics\, and a Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute\, all at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests are centered around improving opportunity and reducing disadvantage for marginalized populations in health promotion and healthcare priority setting. Before coming to Penn\, he was a Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice at the Harvard School of Public Health\, and for seven years served as Assistant Director of the U.K.’s Nuffield Council on Bioethics in London. \nTalk Description: For a number of reasons\, patients do not take medications as prescribed. Currently\, understanding of medication adherence is largely based on patient’s report\, biochemical testing\, or indirect measures such as prescription filling records. However\, a new set of likely disruptive digital and AI-based technologies looks set to profoundly challenge the existing paradigm\, by enabling remote monitoring of adherence in real-time. This talk outlines the main rationales underlying adherence monitoring\, and describes a central range of novel technological approaches. Key ethical issues are discussed\, focusing on the concepts of preference sensitivity\, proportionality\, and the least restrictive alternative\, especially as they apply to monitoring adherence in Tuberculosis treatment.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture Description: \nOn behalf of the Columbia University School of Professional Studies Program in Bioethics and the Completed Life Initiative\, we would like to cordially invite you to attend the 2nd Annual Faith Sommerfield Memorial Lecture on Thursday\, September 26th\, 2024 at 6:15pm. \nThis Memorial Lecture series commemorates the late Ms. Faith Sommerfield’s lifelong interest in autonomy and end-of-life care\, specifically regarding the notion of how all individuals might live a completed life. In 2019\, Ms. Sommerfield founded the Completed Life Initiative\, a New York City non-profit dedicated to pondering these important questions. Professor Peter Singer established the theme of “Living Well\, Dying Well” for the inaugural 2023 lecture. \nOur lecture this year honors Professor Katarzyna de Lazari-Radek from ?ódz?\, Poland. Professor de Lazari-Radek’s professional expertise is on utilitarianism and notions of what it means to live well. She has also developed a personal perspective towards dying well and the completed life\, specifically writing and speaking about her fight against breast cancer last year. \nSpeaker Bio: \nKatarzyna de Lazari-Radek (1975- ) is a professor in the Faculty of Philosophy\, University of ?ódz?\, Poland. For the last 20 years she has studied the subject of well-being\, happiness and pleasure. Philosophically\, she argues for the maximization of pleasure and diminishing of pain among as many beings as possible. She believes she is on a mission to help others to live a good and enjoyable life based on philosophical\, psychological and neurobiological research. \nHer main research interest focuses on the thought of a late Victorian philosopher\, Henry Sidgwick. Together with Peter Singer she wrote two books: The Point of View of the Universe (Oxford University Press\, 2014) and Utilitarianism – A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press 2017) and edited J.S. Mill’s Utilitarianism (Norton\, 2021). In May 2024 Routledge published her The Philosophy of Pleasure\, the first introductory text of this kind on the subject of pleasure. \nIn addition to her academic work\, she is keen to convey philosophical ideas to a popular audience\, and has written for popular magazines on how to live a good life. Since May 2024 together with Peter Singer\, she runs a podcast called Lives Well Lived\, in which remarkable guests talk about what it is to have a good life.
