SUMMARY:Ninth Annual Medical School Ethics Conference: "Drawing the Boundaries of Medicine": Call for Abstracts
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Balint Lecturer and Presentation: Keisha Ray\, PhD \nSubmission due date by November 1\, 2024 to bioethics@amc.edu \nThe annual medical student ethics conference (AMSEC) is a two-day national medical student conference to address ethical issues that arise in medical education. The conference will be held virtually on April 10-April 11\, 2025. The keynote speaker will be Keisha Ray\, PhD\, Associate Professor at the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics and McGovern Medical School at UT Health Houston. \nCall for Abstracts\nThe conference solicits abstracts from students from any accredited medical school in the United States. Over the past nine years\, AMSEC has become a national venue for students to discuss ethical issues in medicine. We instituted a mentorship system\, which pairs the authors of accepted abstracts with faculty mentors to help them develop their conference presentation. These collaborations have resulted in a number of student-led publications in bioethics journals such as The Hastings Center Report\, Bioethics\, and Journal of Medical Ethics. \nThe organizing committee invites abstracts for oral presentations on the ethical issues that arise in medical education because of one’s role as a medical student. The theme for AMSEC 2025 is ” Drawing the Boundaries of Medicine.” We invite submissions related to the conference theme and on any other topic tackling ethical issues in medical education. Potential topics include\, but are not limited to: justice and equity in medicine\, disparity in allocation of educational resources in medical school; learning on/with patients; humor in medicine; moral distress; hierarchy in medicine.

SUMMARY:A Patient's Last Chapter: Ethical Considerations for VSED\, Euthanasia\, and MAID
DESCRIPTION:Currently\, there is significant controversy regarding whether and how patients may work with clinicians to influence the time and manner of their death at the end of life. This session will describe treatment options that might allow patients to hasten death at the end of life\, including patient refusals of life sustaining treatment\, voluntary stopping of eating and drinking\, medical aid in dying\, and euthanasia. \nLearning Objectives:  After this webinar\, attendees will be able to: \n\nDefine and distinguish between treatment options for potentially hastening death at the end of life.\nDescribe the interests of patients in being able to make choices about the time and manner of their deaths at the end of life.\nDescribe ethical principles and commitments that justify or limit clinician involvement in interventions that might hasten death.\n\nSpeaker(s)\n\n\nJoel Wu\, JD\, MPH\, MA\, HEC-C\, is a Center for Bioethics’ Clinical Ethics Assistant Professor and a senior lecturer in the Division of Health Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health.  He is a co-chair of the University of Minnesota Medical Center’s Ethics Committee\, co-lead for the clinical ethics consultation service for MHealth Fairview system hospitals\, and member of the MHealth Fairview Ethics Council. SUMMARY:Penn Program in Clinical Conflict Management Workshops
DESCRIPTION:The Penn Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy is pleased to announce the next in-person conflict management workshops: Thursday-Sunday\, Aug. 22-25\, 2024. We have only a few spots left! \nThe 4-day workshop will be held at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and will run from 9:00-5:00 each day. The Penn Program in Clinical Conflict Management has offered over 100 workshops and conflict resolution seminars since the program’s launch in May 2010. \nIn this Intensive\, students will: \n\nLearn how to navigate and improve challenging clinical relationships (patient-provider\, family-provider\, inter-staff conflicts)\nLearn the techniques of facilitation among a diverse set of stakeholders\nLearn to effectively manage clinical disputes among and between caregivers\, patients and surrogates through mediation\nDiscover to how to define problems and assess underlying interests to generate mutually acceptable options\nRole-play in variety of clinical situations as both disputants and mediators\nPractice mediation with professional actors\nUse video-tapes of simulations to improve mediation techniques and strengthen interpersonal skills\nReceive constructive feedback in a supportive environment\n\nThis workshop is intended for nurses\, physicians\, clergy\, social workers\, clinical ethics consultants and members of ethics committees who face clinical ethics conflicts in their role in the healthcare system. \nDESCRIPTION: \nProfessional mediators possess a unique skill set applicable to the facilitation of difficult conversations between individuals in emotionally laden situations. An effective mediation process can generate solutions that address the underlying interests of all disputants and resolve conflicts that appear intractable. This skill set has increasingly been recognized as invaluable to the work of clinical ethics consultants as they navigate conflicts between and among patients\, families\, surrogates and providers. Moreover\, given wide-spread agreement that communication failures lie at the root of many clinical conflicts\, mediation values and catalyzes the effective communication of individual concerns\, values\, perspectives and feelings — all of which are essential to the clinical ethics consultation process. This hands-on Workshop introduces the principal techniques of mediation through the use of simulated role plays with a focus on conflicts caused by communication breakdowns\, highly charged value-conflicts\, and cultural differences. \nInstructor-Student ratio of 1:3. Space is limited. Students can earn Penn course credit or take the intensive as a workshop. Cost of the workshop is $2\,500\, which includes meals and materials.  Tuition benefits can be applied for students taking it for credit. To apply for the workshop: \nhttps://hosting.med.upenn.edu/forms/mdprogram/view.php?id=35058 \nWorkshop Instructors: \n Autumn Fiester\, PhD  |  Director\, Penn Program in Clinical Conflict Management; Associate Chair for Education \nAliza Narva\, JD\, MSN\, HEC-c  |  Director\, Clinical Ethics Consult Service\, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania \nStacey Smith\, MSN\, MA\, MSL\, HEC-c  |  Lead Healthcare Ethicist\, National Center for Ethics in Healthcare \nMary Walton\, MBE\, MSN\, HEC-c   |  Emeritus Director\, Clinical Ethics Consult Service\, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania \nFor more information\, contact: fiester@upenn.edu

SUMMARY:Why They Blow the Whistle: Exposing Abuses to Human Research Subjects
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis talk will examine how in popular culture\, whistleblowers are conscience-driven heroes who triumph against the odds. Yet when research abuses occur\, medical institutions deny wrongdoing even when it is glaringly obvious\, and rarely do mistreated research subjects or their families get any real justice. Whistleblowing is the exception\, not the rule. In many scandals\, doctors and other staff members remain silent for years while unwitting research subjects are abused. If abuses do come to light\, the researchers are usually protected by the medical establishment while the whistleblowers are punished.
