SUMMARY:The Problem of Health Misinformation and the Role of Bioethics
DESCRIPTION:The James F. Drane Bioethics Institute at PennWest University\, in collaboration with Duquesne University’s Center for Global Health Ethics\, will host the Second Duquesne–PennWest Conference on Global Bioethics from November 12–14\, 2026\, in Edinboro\, Pennsylvania. \nIn today’s deeply interconnected world\, many of the most pressing challenges—ranging from global pandemics and climate change to health inequities and misinformation—transcend disciplinary\, national\, and cultural boundaries. Addressing these complex issues requires ethical frameworks and global collaboration. As an interdisciplinary field rooted in medicine\, philosophy\, public health\, law\, and the social sciences\, bioethics is uniquely positioned to help clarify these challenges and guide just\, evidence-based\, and humane responses. \nThe Duquesne–PennWest Conference on Global Bioethics provides an international forum for scholars\, clinicians\, policymakers\, activists\, institutional leaders\, and students to exchange ideas\, present research\, build networks\, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the ethical dimensions of global health and medicine. \nWe welcome submissions and participation on a wide range of topics\, including but not limited to: \n\nEthical theories and principles in global bioethics\nGlobalization and its impact on health\nGlobal Governance for Health and the role of international organizations\nClimate change and global health\nPandemics\, disease prevention\, and international public health responses\nInternational research ethics and cross-border collaborations\nHealth disparities\, justice\, and access to care\n\nBuilding on the success of the inaugural conference\, the 2026 meeting will focus especially on the growing problem of health misinformation and the critical role of bioethics in confronting it. \nWe invite participants from around the world to join us for three days of rich interdisciplinary exchange\, critical reflection\, and collaborative problem-solving.

DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join us for The Greenwall Foundation’s William C. Stubing Memorial Lecture\, Confinement and Care: The Ethics of Health Care Behind Bars\, on Monday\, November 16\, at 6:30 p.m. EST. \nHomer Venters\, MD\, former Chief Medical Officer for the New York City jail system\, will discuss the ethical dimensions of health care in carceral settings\, including jails\, prisons\, and immigration detention centers. Dr. Venters currently serves as a court-appointed monitor of correctional health and is the author of Life and Death in Rikers Island (2019). He will be joined in conversation by Keri Blakinger\, an investigative reporter at ProPublica covering federal prisons and the death penalty. \nThe Greenwall Foundation will host this year’s William C. Stubing Memorial Lecture in person in New York City and online. The event will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. EST\, followed by the moderated conversation beginning at 6:30 p.m. EST. An audience question-and-answer session will follow. Registration is free and open to all\, but in-person seating is limited.

SUMMARY:Ethical Issues in the Deliberate Release of Engineered Microbes
DESCRIPTION:New technological capabilities always introduce new ethical challenges: under what conditions should we use this technology? What ethical concerns or trade-offs does it reveal? What new obligations does it impose? In this presentation\, Lisa M. Rasmussen\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte\, will explore ethical issues arising in the deliberate release of engineered microbes. This will include a discussion of the general areas of concern\, current ethical approaches\, and a consideration of how we might proceed ethically when we are not sure of the effects of this use. \nThis event is part of the “Engineered Microbes for Environmental Release” webinar series that brings together voices from synthetic biology\, ecology\, policy\, science and technology studies\, biotechnology\, ethics\, and history to explore the social\, technological\, and environmental dimensions of these innovations. Hosted by the Baker Institute’s Science and Technology Policy Program and co-sponsored by the Rice Synthetic Biology Institute\, this webinar series was supported by a grant from Schmidt Sciences and the National Science Foundation (#2223678 & #2515431). \nThis event is free and open to the public.
