SUMMARY:32nd Annual Thomas A. Pitts Memorial Lectureship in Medical Ethics: Ethics and Public Health
DESCRIPTION:The annual Thomas A. Pitts Memorial Lectureship: “Ethics and Public Health” will take place on April 24\, 2026. This year’s topic is Public Health and Ethics. We are bringing together a diverse group of scholars from multiple disciplines to address some of the most important ethical issues related to public health. \nThomas Antley Pitts\, II\, M.D. (1893-1991) served as a member of the Board of the Medical University of South Carolina for thirty-six years and served as its chairman for twenty-five of those years. He left a substantial bequest to the Medical University of South Carolina to endow “a series of lectures on medical ethics.” The series has become known as the Pitts Memorial Lectureship\, and has been held annually since 1993. \nPresented by the: Medical University of South Carolina Institute of Human Values in Health Care\, Office of Humanities\, Office of Continuing Education\, College of Medicine. \nThe Thomas A. Pitts Memorial Lectureship is supported by the MUSC Foundation.

SUMMARY:Uncovering the Past Responsibly: Exploring Ethical Challenges and Recommendations of Ancient DNA Research
DESCRIPTION:Ancient DNA research is transforming how scholars reconstruct population histories\, yet these tools operate within scientific and political landscapes that shape whose ancestors are studied\, how consent is interpreted\, and which communities bear the consequences of genomic discovery. When genetic data are drawn from ancestral remains\, questions of privacy\, cultural authority\, and descendant impact become central rather than peripheral. Without careful governance\, ancient DNA research risks reinscribing historical harms\, marginalizing community knowledge\, and obscuring the lived realities of those most connected to the past. \nThis forum examines how ancient DNA research can be conducted in ways that center ethical responsibility\, community partnership\, and transparency. Drawing on community‑engaged genetic anthropology\, archaeogenetics\, and legal‑ethical analysis\, it identifies evidence‑based strategies for responsible research design\, data stewardship\, and descendant engagement. \nThe discussion will explore key questions: \n\nHow should consent be understood for ancestral remains?\nWhat obligations do researchers hold toward living relatives?\nHow can communities shape research priorities?\nWhat frameworks ensure that ancient DNA research advances knowledge without perpetuating structural harm?\n\nSpeakers: \n\nJada Benn Torres\, PhD (Director\, Laboratory of Genetic Anthropology and Biocultural Studies & Associate Professor of Anthropology\, Vanderbilt University)\nKathrin Nägele\, PhD (Group Leader\, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology)\nmoderated by Jennifer K. Wagner\, JD\, PhD (Assistant Professor of Law\, Policy\, and Engineering & Anthropology\, Penn State University)

SUMMARY:Bioethical Responsibilities in Twenty-First Century Crises
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday April 14th from 7-8:15pm Eastern for a virtual conversation among bioethicists engaging new approaches to tackle current bioethical crises. The conversation will be held as a virtual webinar hosted by the University of Cincinnati Center for Public Engagement with Science to welcome a recent essay collection\, Bioethical Responsibilities in Twenty-First Century Crises\, out now with Bloomsbury Press as part of its Revolutionary Bioethics Series.\n\nThis virtual event will be a discussion between the book editors\, Elizabeth Lanphier and Larry Churchill and four authors from the collection – Johnathan Flowers\, Takunda Matose\, Lisa S. Parker\, and Travis Rieder – to engage in a rich conversation about the core themes of the book: the need for new bioethical methods and focus to address contemporary problems not previously at the forefront of the field\, but for which bioethics is essential to producing solutions. The featured authors’ chapters speak to topics including disability and erasure\, incarceration and detention\, climate change and environmental catastrophe\, and the role of emotions\, affect\, and time in reasoning. The conversation will consider how each of these topics are becoming more pressing every day\, and how\, as individuals and communities\, we might think about our responsibilities to address them. Recognizing that bioethics and the events of our world touch each of us who are alive\, this will be an engaged\, public-facing conversation for a wide audience.\n\nFor those unable to attend live\, the conversation will be recorded and viewable on the Center for Public Engagement with Science YouTube page. But those attending live will also be able to participate and ask questions. We hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:2026 Colorado Healthcare Ethics Forum (CHEF) ANNUAL CONFERENCE - Underexplored Ethical Issues at the End of Life
DESCRIPTION:This event brings together clinicians\, ethicists\, and scholars to examine complex ethical questions that arise in end-of-life care but often receive limited attention in clinical training and discussion. Through a series of expert presentations\, this program will explore ethical challenges related to determinations of non-beneficial treatment\, physician proxy decision-making\, and the uncertainty that frequently accompanies serious illness prognoses. Speakers will also address the ethical dimensions of caring for vulnerable older adults\, strategies for communicating difficult news to patients and families\, and the responsibilities clinicians hold in honoring cultural and personal death rituals. Together\, these discussions aim to deepen participants’ understanding of ethically grounded\, compassionate care at the end of life.
