SUMMARY:Professionalism: Creating a Shared Framework Across Cultures\, Education\, and Practice
DESCRIPTION:The Academy for Professionalism in Health Care (APHC) is an inclusive community of professionals dedicated to advancing professionalism in health-related fields (www.academy-professionalism.org). Our upcoming virtual conference on December 2nd & 3rd will focus on “Professionalism: Creating a Shared Framework Across Cultures\, Education\, and Practice.” Contribute to the framework by sharing an image that calls to mind a concept\, personal experience\, or insight that captures your perspective on what professionalism in the health care setting means to you. \nAPHC invites you to submit an image (e.g.\, photo\, artwork\, illustration\, cartoon) and a short narrative that embodies your perspective on the vision\, values\, and challenges that we face when attempting to teach\, assess\, model\, and live life as professionals in the healthcare setting. \nFor example\, your image might reflect one of the critical themes to be discussed during the conference including: \n\nHow Generational and Cultural Differences affect our Understanding of Professionalism\nHow Professionalism Definitions differ among the healthcare professions\nTeaching and Modeling Professionalism\nHow do Diverse Patient Populations affect our Approach to Professionalism\nHow do Professional Values align with Personal Values\nProfessionalism in Action – Moments of Clarity\n\nYou can find examples from our June conference which focused on “advocacy” here: https://cybermine.net/aphc-advocacy. \nSubmissions are due by Friday\, November 13. \nSubmission Guidelines: \n\nCreate an email titled “APHC Images of Professionalism”.\nAttach your image along with a title and a short narrative text describing the concept or experience embodied in your image and how it contributes to the Professionalism Framework.\nInclude your affiliation or location and contact email in the text.\nDescribe the source of the image or how the image was created. If AI was used in the creation\, please describe the tools and prompts used.\nSend your submission to Gerald Stapleton (Project Lead) at gstapltn@gmail.com.\n\nSubmissions will be reviewed by Conference Committee members for relevance and creativity. Selected images along with your narrative will be exhibited on the APHC website\, and during conference breaks. Conference participation is encouraged but not required to submit an entry. \nBy submitting your image\, you acknowledge that APHC has the right to share the image and the accompanying narrative on the APHC website\, in the organization’s newsletter\, and during conference breaks. It is imperative that no copyrighted material be submitted for inclusion without the express permission of the copyright holder\, and that no recognizable individuals be included in your image unless accompanied by a signed waiver.

SUMMARY:Unpacking Bedside Bioethics Ethical Issues in Posted Behavior Signs
DESCRIPTION:There has been a proliferation of posted behavior signs over the last five years. They are now ubiquitous in both inpatient and outpatient settings and across pediatric\, adult\, and allied health practices. Named as notices for “Patients and Visitors\,” these signs identify a range of conduct\, from clinical noncompliance\, use of profanity\, and raised voices to acts or threats of physical violence. While these signs may offer a tangible signal from institutional leadership to staff that disruptive behavior is unacceptable\, there is no empirical evidence that they are effective in reducing workplace violence or verbal attacks. Aside from the problem of efficacy\, I argue that posted behavior signs are ethically troubling for the way they treat patients and families and for the impact they can have on them. I identify four distinct ethical concerns with these signs\, which I believe require either their removal or their substantial modification.
