SUMMARY:Humanities and Oral Health Justice: Thinking Bioethically Through Annie
DESCRIPTION:Visual art\, music\, narrative\, and performance have long shaped public consciousness around justice\, dignity\, and care. For this reflective workshop and discussion we center on the musical Annie\, set in 1933 at the depths of the Great Depression\, as a cultural lens for examining oral health justice. The song “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” becomes our ethical anchor: a cheerful radio jingle sponsored by toothpaste\, proclaiming that a smile is life’s great equalizer. Yet the story’s context exposes the contradiction\, during a period of mass poverty\, discriminatory policy\, and limited access to care\, a “beautiful smile” was a privilege unavailable to millions\, including children like Annie and her fellow orphans. \nBy treating Annie as a humanities text\, we explore how media\, music\, and narrative reveal the moral tensions between aspiration and reality\, between institutional ideals and lived experience\, and between the promise of the New Deal and the inequities that persisted [and continue to persist] in oral health. We also foreground how class\, disability\, and race shape access to care\, dignity\, and social belonging. This multidisciplinary session uses Annie to illuminate how stories shape ethical imagination\, how cultural narratives influence public perceptions of dental care\, and how providers can reflect on their own responsibilities toward oral health justice today\, even exploring moral distress experienced by providers who witness inequities they cannot fully resolve. The session culminates in a reflective dialogue on how humanities‑driven inquiry can inspire contemporary advocacy\, community connection\, and institutional repair. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Open Source Tools for Environmental Biotechnology: Accelerating Science and Increasing Equity
DESCRIPTION:Biotechnology is a complex\, time-consuming and expensive discipline\, and even more so when we consider discovery or deployment of biotechnology at environmental scales. We need to deploy the right tools in the right place\, at the right time and the right scale to generate impactful data and design safe and effective interventions. Those tools also need to be accessible to scientists from diverse geographies and backgrounds\, enabling more equitable opportunities to shape the future of environmental biotechnology. In this lecture\, Jennifer Molloy\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Research Professor at the University of Cambridge & Group Leader at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology\, will discuss open source as one approach to achieving these goals. She will illustrate the benefits and remaining challenges through examples of existing software\, hardware and “wetware” projects that are already accelerating science and increasing equity in environmental biotechnology. \nThis event is part of the “Engineered Microbes for Environmental Release” webinar series that brings together voices from synthetic biology\, ecology\, policy\, science and technology studies\, biotechnology\, ethics\, and history to explore the social\, technological\, and environmental dimensions of these innovations. A team at the University of Minnesota has developed SpudCell — the first synthetic cell that can grow and reproduce\, built from non-living chemicals. Scientists at Stanford and Arc Institute recently published on their successful use of AI to design new virus genomes. However\, scientists have cautioned against creating organisms with molecules that are the mirror image of the biological components of known life\, as existing organisms would have no immune defenses.
