The Sickening Trend of Medicalised FGM
June 20, 2016
(The Guardian) – The 28 Too Many report says the argument for the medicalisation of FGM is that it provides a safer procedure in areas where complete eradication of FGM has not yet been achieved. However, although medicalisation can contribute to the reduction of immediate risks such as infection and pain, it fails to eliminate long-term gynaecological and obstetric complications, as well as life-long emotional, psychological and sexual problems. And even when carried out by medical professionals, FGM can still result in fatalities. Carrying out FGM violates the principles of professional health ethics ‘to do no harm’, and constitutes a violation of girls’ and women’s rights’, the report concludes.
