This year’s annual conference examines the relationship between spirituality and healthcare from many perspectives. With this topic, the Institute continues the effort to assist healthcare providers with significant, real-life problems (2008: healthcare reform; 2007: medical futility; 2006: professionalism and ethics education; 2005: three thematic concerns—PVS, legal myths and clinical ethics consultation; 2004: improving the quality of end-of-life care; 2003: conflicts of interest; 2002: medical errors and patient safety; 2001: managed care dilemmas).
The invited speakers, both of whom will be receiving the Pellegrino Medal at the conference, include: Karen Lebacqz, is professor emerita of theological ethics at the Pacific School of Religion who has written extensively on professional ethics, bioethics and ethical theory; and Daniel P. Sulmasy, O.F.M., M.D., Ph.D., a general internist and philosopher who holds the Sisters of Charity Chair in Ethics at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Manhattan, and serves as professor of medicine and director of the bioethics institute of New York Medical College.  Continuing education credit will be offered in medicine, pharmacy and nursing. This year, the conference will be held on Samford University’s campus in Birmingham; special parking will be available.
