Event: 2009 Advancing Ethical Research Conference
April 13, 2009
Advancing Ethical Research Conference
November 14-16th, 2009
Nashville, TNÂ
The 2009 Advancing Ethical Research Conference Scholarship Program assists those members of the research, academic, and medical communities who cannot attend the conference due to financial constraints. PRIM&R has developed four distinct scholarship programs to aid those individuals otherwise unable to attend.
Institutional Capacity Building Scholarship Program
Many small, underfunded institutions of higher education in the United States need, but do not have, fully functioning IRBs or human research protection programs (HRPPs). Many of these institutions serve primarily minority populations with educational disparities, such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Others are health institutions serving minority populations with significant health disparities, such as community clinics, regional or area Indian Health Boards, and tribal governments. Almost all such institutions have significantly fewer resources than their larger peer institutions. In addition, many of these institutions are being asked to take on greater roles in research by participating in studies or initiating their own research activities.
Through the Institutional Capacity Building Scholarship Program, PRIM&R will offer a limited number of scholarships for the2009 AER Conference, including registration for a pre-conference educational program, registration for the meeting, travel, lodging, and a per diem stipend for meals beyond those provided at the conference.
As it is our experience that two or more people are more likely to be successful than just one in initiating or developing an HRPP, scholarships will be awarded to institutions that agree to release two people to participate in the conference.
Application DeadlineÂ
Completed applications and a letter of recommendation for the Institutional Capacity Building Scholarship Program must be received by 5:00 PM ET on Friday, June 5, 2009.
International Scholarship & International Student/Beginning Professional Scholarship Programs
PRIM&R is dedicated to improving communication among research ethics committees (RECs), researchers, and others professionals involved in international research. This is especially important today as more and more research is being conducted outside of the United States. Many RECs in developing countries have significantly fewer resources than HRPPs in the United States and lack adequate funding to develop their research programs. Therefore, there is an urgent need to increase awareness and facilitate networking and collaboration with those involved in research globally. PRIM&R has created a limited number of two types of scholarships for qualified representatives from developing countries to attend the 2009 AER Conference:
The International Scholarship is designed for those who have established themselves in the research ethics profession; theInternational Student/Beginning Professional Scholarship is for those who are in graduate school, are pursuing a doctorate, or who have less than five years experience in their professional field.
Both scholarships will include registration for a pre-conference educational program, registration for the main conference, travel, lodging, and a per diem stipend for meals beyond those provided at the conference.
