Surrogacy a step closer

April 18, 2011

Tasmanian couples are a step closer to being able to use a surrogate mother to carry their child. Legislation to allow altruistic surrogacy passed the Lower House of state parliament yesterday. It allows all couples to use a surrogate, regardless of their marital status or sexual orientation. Commercial surrogacy remains illegal, but surrogate mothers can be compensated for reasonable medical and associated costs. The Liberal Party failed to have the minimum age of surrogates raised to 25.  (ABC News)
