Illegal Organ Trade Plagues India’s Destitute

(The Toronto Star) – Canada’s health system made Rama Rau open her eyes to ugly secrets in her native India, prompting her to ask her women friends why so many had scars on their sides. And it led to the documentary filmmaker’s next project, The Market, about India’s illegal organ trade. The tsunami that devastated the Indian Ocean region in 2004 has had a lasting effect and one that leads women to sell their kidneys as they try to climb on top of mounting debts.
