Blood Supplies Run Low as Omicron Limits Donations

(Wall Street Journal) – Blood is in short supply in the U.S., with donation drives stalled amid Covid-19 and demand rising as people resume medical care they put off earlier in the pandemic. The employer and church-sponsored donation drives many blood centers rely on have been on pause because some people are working from home and various congregations are having virtual worship services. Demand for blood also has risen, a change from the pandemic’s first phase, said Bruce Sachais, chief medical officer and vice president of New York Blood Center Enterprises. Many people are once again going to the doctor for routine or preventive care even as the Omicron variant pushed up Covid-19 cases again. (Read More)
