‘Buying Hope’: Unproven Stem Cell Treatments Facing Tighter Regulation

(Australian Broadcasting Co) – There are now more than 50 clinics in Australia offering stem cell treatment through cells derived from the patient’s fat, which is extracted through liposuction. With the patient receiving his or her own cells, the process is exempt from the normal regulations governing cell therapy. But health authorities are concerned about patient safety and now the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is set to introduce new regulations to more tightly control the industry.
