Why Didn’t Politico’s Historic Roe v. Wade Scoop Win a Pulitzer?

(Vanity Fair) – It was around this time last year that Politico reporters Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward obtained and published a draft Supreme Court opinion ending the constitutional right to abortion. Never in the modern history of the court had an entire draft decision of this magnitude been leaked to the press. It was a generational scoop, one that others could not match and that was ultimately proven true. And it seemed to all but guarantee Politico, the upstart turned establishment media outlet, its first reporting-based Pulitzer Prize—journalism’s highest honor. Gerstein and Ward, as well as Peter Canellos, Hailey Fuchs, and Heidi Przybyla, who worked on other stories submitted as part of the Pulitzer package, already won the George Polk Award for National Reporting a few months ago, and the Pulitzer seemed next.
