Award winning author and attorney Wesley J. Smith has joined the blogging team here at bioethics.com. Smith has many roles, including senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, attorney and consultant for the International Task Force on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide, and special consultant to the Center for Bioethics and Culture.
In his 20+ years as a writer and public advocate, Smith has authored or co-authored eleven books. His latest book is Consumer’s Guide to A Brave New World, in which he investigates the morality, science and business aspects of human cloning and genetic engineering.
His book Forced Exit: The Slippery Slope from Assisted Suicide to Legalized Murder , a broad-based criticism of the assisted suicide/euthanasia movement, was published in 1997, and revised in 2003 and 2006.
Smith’s Culture of Death: The Assault on Medical Ethics in America (2001), a warning about the dangers of the modern bioethics movement, was named one of the Ten Outstanding Books of the Year and Best Health Book of the Year for 2001 (Independent Publisher Book Awards).
Power over Pain: How to Get the Pain Control You Need (2002) was co-authored with Eric M. Chevlen, MD, a noted pain control medical specialist. Power over Pain is a consumer’s guide to accessing quality pain controlling medical treatment.
Smith’s writing and opinion columns on assisted suicide, bioethics, the morality of human cloning, the dangers of animal liberation, legal ethics, and public affairs have appeared nationally and internationally, including in Newsweek, Forbes, New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Weekly Standard, National Review, Mother Jones, Free Inquiry, The National Post (Canada), The Age (Australia), Western Journal of Medicine, the Congressional Quarterly Researcher, and the American Journal of Bioethics. He has also been published in regional publications throughout the nation. Smith wrote the chapter on assisted suicide for the Encyclopedia of Crime and Justice and has authored chapters in several books relating to the various issues about which he advocates.
He has appeared on more than 1,000 television or radio talk/interview programs, including such national programs as ABC Nightline, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, CNN Crossfire, CNN World Report, Coast to Coast, the Tony Snow Show, the CBS Evening News, CSPAN-Book TV, Fox News, and CNN Talk Back Live. He has also appeared internationally on Voice of America, CNN International, BBC World Service and on programs originating in Great Britain (National and Regional BBC), Australia (ABC), New Zealand, Germany, China, and Canada (CBC).
Smith is an international lecturer and public speaker, appearing frequently at political, university, medical, legal, disability rights, bioethics, religious, and community gatherings across the United States, Europe, Canada, South Africa, and Australia.
Currently, he is researching a book that will investigate the anti-human values of the animal rights/liberation movement.
