(NYT) – A patient was unable to move from the sternum down after a routine knee-replacement operation at a Nashville hospital this month. The hospital said she had been given the wrong anesthetic.

Ms. Dorton, 72, of Centerville, Tenn., was one of four patients who suffered serious adverse reactions after they were administered potassium phosphate instead of the intended anesthetic, mepivacaine, for what were supposed to be routine procedures at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown.
